Introducing Marlinette from Marli Make-Up. She is a Cape Town based make-up artist that I had the pleasure of meeting while working together on set. From the moment I met her I could immediately see the great passion she has for make-up and her work. The following Q & A will help you to get to know the person behind the beautifully painted faces.
1. TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR COMPANY?
I am a free-lance make-up artist and hairstylist working in Beauty, Stills and TV Commercial Industry. I have a wide range of experience within the corporate, retail, advertising and creative industries dealing with all things beauty. Besides the practical application of makeup and styling hair for various looks and needs, I also consult on product development, product launches and initiate various projects involved in promoting these brands/products.
2. HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE BUSINESS?
I grew up in a smaller town not being exposed to and unaware of this wonderful industry and career. After years of traveling and later working as a kitchen designer, my amazing mom found a school based in Cape Town for makeup artists and hairstylists working on Weddings, Magazine and TV shoots etc. When I read about the course something inside of me leapt! I made the move to Cape Town and the rest is history!
3. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART OF THE JOB?
Definitely the people I meet!
4. IF YOU COULD PICK ONE UNIQUE PRODUCT TO USE, WHICH WOULD BE YOUR FAVORITE, AND WHY?
A liquid highlighter. It is one of the most versatile products and the easiest way to create a youthful glow. You can use it on it’s own, mix it with your foundation, it can be applied to eyes, lips and over foundation.
5. WHAT’S THE BIGGEST LESSON YOU’VE LEARNED IN THE INDUSTRY?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is probably to always be patient.
6. WHAT MAKES YOU DIFFERENT FROM OTHERS IN YOUR FIELD?
It’s difficult to say..my clients always comment on my attention to detail and they appreciate my peaceful, calm and collected approach to the day.
7. ARE THERE ANY TRENDS THAT YOU ABSOLUTELY LOVE OR WOULD LOVE TO SEE WOMEN LEAVE BEHIND?
For the last couple of years there has been a big move towards natural beauty..natural hair, natural skin. Less-is-more! I am a huge advocate of less-is-more, embracing the best you. Using makeup and styling to enhance as apposed to hide.
8. DO YOU PREFER TO DO BRIDAL OR FASHION MAKE-UP, AND WHY?
They are both very different and require a different skillset for each, that is what I enjoy most! I can not choose one or the other.
9. ANY GREAT STORIES FROM WORKING WITH A CLIENT?
I have too many behind the scenes stories..hhahaha! From swopping bras with celebs, sewing a brides torn dress 30mins before walking down the aisle, to piggy backing Miss SA across swampy water to save the designer outfit she was wearing for the shoot.
10. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU PASS ALONG TO OTHERS JUST GETTING STARTED IN YOUR FIELD
Be patient, and be willing to start at the bottom and work hard. Attitude is everything and word of mouth is what sells you. You are only ever as good as your last job has never been as true as in this industry.
